Employee Motivation: Would They Work for You for Nothing?

Employee Motivation: Would They Work for You for Nothing?

How well motivated are your employees? Employee motivation is highly important for business growth, because if you understand the reasoning behind their actions, you can tap into this to improve business performance.

“Highly engaged, motivated employees perform better and are more resilient and adaptable to change,” explains Greg Searle MBE, Chief Innovation Officer for Keys Business Concierge.

Drawing on his background as a successful Olympic athlete, Greg talks about the benefits of intrinsic motivation for both employers and the people who work for them.

What is the Key to Employee Motivation?

“For some people, work doesn’t feel like work, because the more they put in, the more they get out of it, just as athletes are motivated by the keen sense of achievement that participation in sport gives them.”

However, this is not a given state of affairs, and for employers, the benefits of a highly motivated workforce will only come from instilling a strong, positive workplace culture.

“Not all businesses have a motivated workforce. For these employers, they must first understand the types of employees they have, whether they are engaged, not engaged or actively disengaged”

Greg Searle MBE, Keys Business Concierge

“How engaged they are not largely depends on how they feel. If an employer can make them feel suitably challenged and stimulated by their work, and lets them know much they value them, then this can lead to intrinsic motivation.”

“It is about hard-wiring the impetus that drives employees into their perception of the roles they occupy. If these things interconnect, it can give them a strong sense of personal accomplishment in their work.”

Elements of Intrinsic Motivation

“Positively challenging employees makes them feel more engaged. Part of this is to help give them more decision-making, to fully involve them in their work.”

Adding more choice into how people work also motivates them.

“The more you match tasks and assignments with people’s skills and preferences, the more you get out of them and the more engaged they are with their work.”

Reinforcing this should be a focus on mentoring and education. This helps build a sense of worth and belonging, and, vitally, progression.

“People want to feel they can develop, and to feel that they are encouraged in this.”

Rewards and Independence

Building a culture that fosters intrinsic motivation means rewarding employees meaningfully. This is about more than financial rewards and goes to the heart of how to motivate them.

“Give your employees something that has a legacy, and that will resonate with them both in and away from the workplace. Give them back time. Offer them the means to support their efforts, and their daily lives and their independence.”

These are some of the benefits of a business concierge service.

“Rather than being a luxury add-on, a business concierge service can offer long-term reward benefits to employees and, in so doing, enhance the culture of their workplace, providing the kind of practical business support that can restore or ensure a healthier work-life balance”

Greg Searle MBE, Keys Business Concierge

“Would your employees work for you for nothing? If you’ve created a strong sense of intrinsic motivation, that might not be a far-fetched concept,” Greg concludes.
